About 10 million year ago flamingos would live mainly on the Darkland. This is because this area of land has many savannas and grasslands at the coastline which is the perfect habitat that flamingos are adapted for.
Today flamingos would live on Greater Kalorme for the same reasons as described above. According to blueplanetbiomes.org the normal climates for this type of area is 68 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit and 68 to 78 degrees in the winter. The water levels can vary but for the most part remain low. They have little vegetation.
Changes in Planet Arda After Colonization by Organisms
10,000,000 years ago: Planet Arda is in an Ice Age:
During this time there was about a 15 degree drop in the temperature in Arda which would not have directly affected the flamingos themselves but affected other organisms in their food chain so it then affected the flamingos. This drop in temperature made the other organisms that birds of prey consume scarce so to compensate for the lack of food these birds of prey would attack adult flamingos and their eggs even more which decreased the flamingo population by a lot. Because there were fewer flamingos the algae populations increased to which helped populations of fish that consumed the algae become larger because there was more food.
9,500,000 years ago:
Water levels dropped which was good and bad for the flamingos. While flamingos prefer lower water levels in their habitats it also made it easier for land predators to get to them and attack. During this time biomes like the taiga expended into others so when this happened the large land-roaming creature from the taiga came to the coasts and began to consume flamingos. These predators include black bears and grizzly bears who before this time would have never been able to consume animals like flamingos because of location. The bears were taking food from the birds of prey who were normally the predators so their numbers decreased. Flamingo numbers also increased slightly since tropical areas moved closer to the equator and therefore became warmer.
9,000,000 years ago:
The global warming that happened at this time caused the bears to no longer be predators for the flamingos because they had to retreat to colder areas where their numbers increased. Their migration caused an increase in flamingo populations which helped to regulate algae populations. The rising water levels provided a new line of defense for flamingos against predators which also contributed to their numbers rising.
8,000,000 years ago:
Since the ice sheets melted at this time the microorganisms that flamingos consume became more prevalent. Other than that nothing much has changed since the period of 9,000,000 years ago.
6,000,000 years ago:
During this Darkland and Kalorme collided and since Darkland was where most of the flamingos lived the collision had a huge impact on the flamingos. Up until this point the species was very secluded to that island only but when the collision happened some of the flamingos migrated into Kalorme. This was when the most change occurred in the physical and behavioral characteristics of flamingos because the kind of biomes on Kalorme were different from those on Darkland. Kalorme was home of more deciduous forest and while the flamingos still went to the coastlines in those areas they still had to get used to their surrounding such as the stronger drop in temperature during the winter. A major adaptation in these organisms came up because of this which was thicker feathers to keep them warm. There were also many more land roaming predators in those areas that would feed on flamingoes so in response flamingos turned to feeding nocturnally.
4,000,000 years ago-2,000,000 years ago:
Sea levels had risen by 200 feet during this time which at first became a problem for flamingoes but then they began to swim farther and longer into deeper waters which caused the diet of the land roaming creatures in deciduous to take a hit which caused their numbers to decrease. But because they were swimming more every once in a while sharks would feed on flamingoes during this time.
Present
Kalorme collided with Ocrania so the thing that happened with the first collision between Darkland and Kalorme happened again so the flamingos spread out even more which made their numbers skyrocket even more.
